DIO3OS: DIO3 opposite strand/antisense RNA (head to head) C14orf134,NCRNA00041, DIO3-AS1

Characteristics

Antisense and head to head with Dio3 from the Dlk1-Dio3 imprtinted locus (Hernandez (2004)). A large number of isoforms are transcribed through alternative splicing and start sites some of which overlap Dio3 (Hernandez (2004)). Also overlaps a provisional microRNA miR1247.

Expression

Various DIO3OS isoforms are expressed in a wide range of human tissues including adult testis, adrenal cortex, heart, bladder, uterus, placenta and fetal lung (Hernandez (2004)). Expressed in embryonic and extra-embryonic tissue in mouse. Weakly expressed in several neonatal and adult tissues: brain and liver (adult only), intestine and tougue (neonate only), kidney and lung (expressed in both) (Tierling (2006)). Analysis in different cell culture lines showed co-expression of DIO3OS transcripts and DIO3 (Kester (2006)). Conversely differentiation of mature brown adipose tissue (BAT) adipocytes from precursor cells showed that Dio3 was only expressed in the proliferating precursors while a specific Dio3os isoform was expressed only in differentiated adipocytes (Hernandez (2007)). Not imprinted in mouse (Tierling (2006)).

Conservation

Aside from the short exon 1, there is poor sequence conservation and no conserved ORFs between mouse and human Dio3os (Hernandez (2004)).
