NAMA: non-protein coding RNA, associated with MAP kinase pathway and growth arrest(HGNC nomenclature)

Characteristics

NAMA lacks significant ORFs and with most exons showing very low sequence identity between human and mouse, which suggests that NAMA is not a protein-coding gene but a noncoding RNA (ncRNA). NAMA might belong to a class of large ncRNAs that were recently identified and transcribed from intergenic or intronic regions and whose functions are still unknown[1].

Function

The unspliced NAMA is the active form, perhaps in a tissue specific manner. NAMA may behave as a multifaced molecule or has dual effects depending on the stimuli to which it reacts[1].

Regulation

NAMA was induced when MAP kinase pathway was blocked by U0126, which decreased the level of phospho-ERK, resulting in cell cycle arrest in G1. This induction occurred in the PTC cell lines as well as in HCT116 cells that have a mutation in KRAS, suggesting that regulation of NAMA by the MAP kinase pathway is not restricted to PTC cell lines[1].
